After nearly 24 hours of travel, we have made it to our hostel in Bangkok! Charlie kindly gave me his cold the day before we left, so I got to experience a 15-hour flight while being sick... The altitude was tough to deal with, but we slept most of the way, and the Zzz-Quil and Ny-Quil definitely helped ;)
We had a 3 hour layover in Gangzhou, China. I had braised chicken, pork dumplings, and hot tea:
The flight to Bangkok from there was less than 3 hours. We landed in Bangkok sometime around 10 am, and took a tram to the City Center from the airport. The tram was clean and fast, and cost 90 Baht ($1.50 each). Once we figured our way out of the giant tram station called "Thai-Phaya BTS", we tried to hail a taxi to take us the rest of the way. Weirdly, two taxi drivers shooed us away when we told them where we were going, and we don't know why! Then, when one let us in, he told us it would cost 150 Baht, and I mistakenly thought that converted to $50, so we tried to haggle but he wouldn't budge so we got out. Then it started to DOWNPOUR! That's also when I realized that I did the math all wrong, and that driver was offering us a $5 ride, not $50! Whoops. We got in another taxi who told us 200 Baht, and we got him down to 170, which meant we paid around $6 for our taxi to the hostel.
Now, we've finally made it to our hostel - called "Mad Monkey" and clearly a place to party - and are relaxing with a Thai iced coffee and cold cider before we check in. Apparently the hostel is hosting a pool party tonight! A lot of it is outdoors, and it seems to be in the center of the city. Both of us are slowly coming back to life... being in a place that isn't meant for travel is refreshing! We've spent the last 24 hours in airports, airplanes, trams, and taxis!
Right now, we are trying to beat the jet lag by staying awake all day and into the night so that we can sleep well tonight and wake up rested and on Thai-time, and ready to explore! I'll post more pictures in posts to come... I'm not feeling too photogenic after all the traveling! Until then, check back for all our updates on this blog!
